How to Read a Green Like a Pro

Putting is where scores are made or broken — and it all starts with reading the green. Here's how to do it like a pro.

1. Start from Behind the Ball

Always begin your read from behind the ball, looking toward the hole. This gives you the best view of the overall slope and break.

2. Walk the Line

Take a slow walk from your ball to the hole, paying attention to any subtle slopes, ridges, or grain changes underfoot. Your feet can feel what your eyes sometimes miss.

3. Read from the Low Side

Crouch down on the low side of the hole to get a clear picture of how much the putt will break. This angle reveals the true slope better than any other position.

4. Factor in Grain

Grass grain affects ball speed and direction. Putts with the grain are faster; against the grain are slower. Look for a shiny surface (with grain) vs. a dull surface (against grain).

5. Commit and Trust Your Read

Once you've made your read, commit to it fully. Doubt is a golfer's worst enemy on the green. Pick your line, set up, and trust your stroke.

Pro Tip: The more greens you play, the better your reads become. Practice with intention and your putting will improve dramatically.
